They were used by Abingdon on the works cars, they use a separate 4TR control unit (regulator) as opposed to an integrated one.
They were standard fitment on a lot of vehicles 60's-70's

Hi there, the 11ac alternator could not be described as “small”, it’s chunkier than an “acr” alternator. This picture shows the cast alloy bracket that fits it to the block and on “works” cars the front panel was cut away to allow easier fitting and removal.

I do dont think the 11AC was a “Works” Alternator as such, it was fitted to various vehicles back in the day - inc Vans and lorries.
There are various types as well, inc right and left fitting and neg and pos earth……
As far as I know they all need a separate regulator box as well.
The “Works” may of fitted specific parts though (I am not sure ) like brackets ?
One to be careful buying….

My cop car had an 11 AC alternator fitted, with seoarate regulator (mounted on right hand side of scuttle panel). I machined the insides of the old 11AC to accept 18ACR guts.

Well let us just say Abingdon fitted 11 AC's

This was published in MotorSport April 1966.

It was of course won by Rauno Aaltonen

Lucas used the Abingdon works as test beds for theirt alternators for durability and the soaking that they'd be subject to. They did want to use Army mid range vehicles such as Land Rovers (The Bedfords were starting to use the big AC Delco alternators) but seemingly, the MoD didn't want its operational fleet used as guinea pigs.

I was not saying that the "Works" didn`t fit them, just that they were also fitted to a number of other vehicles as well - so not a special "Works" only item ...

Early cars positive ground (because that is the way that they were in production), I suppose they changed to negative earth when it came into production Mk2 possibly
They changed it I believe to do with electron flow & its effects on body corrosion.

Is it just a myth or reality that pisitive ground effects corrosion?

I believe there are other benefits spark plug erosion, but I don't think it's a myth but I just go with the Flow so to speak.

In mid 60s significant proportion of the BMC vehicles using 11AC as a “Standard part” were commercial, I wonder if it had any thing to do with influence from Leyland ?
They were also using a combination of positive and negative earth….I suppose, it depended on when the model was released.

my memory from the mid 60,s .. Alternators were seen as not suitable for Cars as the Lucas Alternator were 12v negative earth & they supplied 24v battery packs .. Leyland Industrial Engines ( 6 & 4 cyl: ) that we installed in new built Mobile Cranes all had Lucas Alternators & there was never an issue with reliability.
