Hello

Nearly got my Wolseley back together following some issues with the rebuilt engine, current build is:

Rob Walker 1043CC Block
Oselli Head
Keith Dodd 1.5 Rockers
Evo 1 Cam
Flat Top Pistons
Cooper S Spec Valves
Nikki Twin Choke / SU 38 AAA Needle

Should be a flyer but the builder has run into a few problems with the Cam, its dialled in at 107 degrees but it is as if their is no power or a vacuum issue. He has tried the SU but cannot get it to run with it, it is a NOS part never been fitted.

Question is, digging for a little research has anyone used an EVO 1 Cam before and what did you dial it into?

Dump the 1.5 rockers. I fitted an Evo001 cam to my wife's 1330 and it makes 90 bhp with standard rockers.

it does say on the spec sheet 107° btdc, but no need to use 1.5 rockers https://www.minispares.com/product/Clas ... ON001.aspx

Using the 1.5 Rockers as they were on the old head and have probably less than 1000 miles on them, I do not have any standard rockers but after doing some research this evening (prompted by whistler) could be the next thing to try. I am working through what was built and trying to make it drivable basically with the current spec.

The build is on a small bore motor, 1.5 rockers would be overkill or just plain killing

Have an Evo1 in my std; bore 1300GT Engine Moke ..set up Dot to Dot with S Rockers & HS2,s .. then taken to Colin at SMMC for set up on their Rollers.. Evo1 cam suits me for road use very tractable .
MS state the Evo1 is not suitable for 1.5 rockers

The original build was an absolute mess, imagine a collection of good parts put together with zero knowledge and I’ve ended up replacing 80% of it at considerable time and expense, hopefully this is the final piece of the jigsaw.

If you insist in using 1.5 rockers, like I do for some reason, the EVO 2 from Minispares is your cam of choice.

Looks like a potentially good spec, but I do agree that the 1.5 rockers are over kill. Oh & the other issue is the Nikki carb. . . . . . They are totally useless!

Chuck it away & use a single SU it will be MUCH Better, all round. Getting those Nikki carbs even close to being right across the rev range is impossible.

Good News (ish)

I sourced some standard rockers and although running better it’s still not where it should be considering the spec, no real power or performance above 50. My engine builder spoke to Classic and Modern in Bracknell who supplied the flat top pistons, machined the head and supplied the cooper s spec valves and all roads point to the cam now.

As I have said before, this engine and car in fact, has been put together very badly and although I have a receipt for an evo1 cam I suspect it may not be what is installed. Classic and Modern race A35’s and they have suggested a Piper 285 which is a known entity to them so that’s what I have gone for

All work is being fitted in around other Customer work which suits me fine with my current work load, should be a well sorted car when it comes home.

Piper 285 bit much for a small engine, in my opinion that is, I'm intending to use a Piper 255 when I get round to doing the mini 1000 engine

For a small bore the 255, evo1 or sw5 cam should be fine with std rockers and as MK1 says an SU carb

I’m running an evo1 on a 1275 S engine with no problems. Feels very similar to the MG metro I had back in the day, but maybe a bit less peaky. The evo1 definitely feels more torquey lower in the rev range than the standard 510 ‘S’ cam I had in my previous otherwise identical engine build.

But - do not trust the ‘Dot to dot’ timing…

With a new sprocket set and chain, I measured the lift using a DTI at 5 thou before/after TDC on the leading and trailing edge of the inlet lobe. The values were 88° and 116° so it was dot-to-dot at 102° degrees, so it seems the keyway was cut about half a tooth out of spec.

I had to use a 5° offset woodruff key on the sprocket, to meet the target of 107° per the minispares spec for the cam.

Correct, a few more modifications also not mentioned such as straight cut box, crank strap..

Main aim is a fast country road machine, I get bored riding my motorbike all the time.

The Evo1 is a really good cam, I have used a few & know a lot more people who have used them as well. I have HONESTLY never heard a bad word said about them. Really good cam for the money.

It is most likely that the cam you have isn't an EVO 1 or is timed in wrong, either way it's an engine out job to discover the truth.

DON'T use the 285 !

I've got a Piper 270 in my 1107 (68mm bore 998) and it's borderline too much cam.
Nothing to speak of below 3000rpm then the horizon approaches rapidly as you grab another gear.
Nightmare to get through an MoT emissions test...

Those A35 engines are based on the Marina 1275 A+ block, not the smaller 1098cc. They also have very high compression ratios and don't seem to last long under race conditions!

My last one didn't do a lap...
The cam in the sealed engine is a criminal attempt at a scatter pattern. All it does is send the dynamic compression ratio through the roof on the inner pair of cylinders and we all end up burning No3 piston.
