Apparently the exchange rate is good and a lot of owners are looking to sell their classics in SA at the moment…. But then it was a SA car dealer that told me that!! Maybe a GTS will soon be mine!

The rate is currently around 24 Rand to the Pound. This is as good (from our point of view) as it has ever been. But SA sellers are far more savvy about world prices than they were a few years ago. So a local price & an international price could be quite different.

We have a few SA members on here, who may be prepared to help in finding / exporting a car. This may be a better bet than using a broker.

I've noticed a dealer up here on C&C who seems to specialise in importing Fords from SA, presumably filling containers with them so there must be money to be made.

I would suggest also looking on to the hoops you need to jump through to get it registered / MOTed once it's in the UK. The past about 15 months now, I receive a few emails a month from people who have imported Mokes from South Africa to the UK, or bought them from a local who did and needs all manner of paperwork, proof, and goodness knows what in order to satisfy the DVLA, with some even after a year, no closer to having them legally on the road.

The biggest problem with importing cars from SA is that if they were originally CKD kits imported from the UK, the SA logbook will say "Assembled From Parts". This, as Spider suggests, can cause no end of difficulty getting a car registered in the UK.

That's a nice looking GTS. Sadly the correct wheel arches are missing, as it has plastic wheel arches like the Australian GT. What year model is that one?

I'm from South Africa and also own a nice little original GTS. Here's some pics of mine. Originally it's suppose to have 12" wheels on with 8.4" brakes, but i changed to 10" wheels, as i had new tyres and the rims and put a set of 4 pot 7.5" brakes on i had. I rebuilt the whole front suspension and motor as well.
