Door catch plate disappeard

:o Can anyone come up with a good idea how to get over this?

The plate which holds the catch has gone. Presumably whilst the shell was upside down getting the new floor welded in.

If anyone has a way of getting another plate in without cutting the B post open I would be forever grateful.

I’ve had to repair this area before . Probably no help to you as your car has top coat on . You maybe able to go in from the rear . … the image may help as you can see what’s directly at the back of the part you need to get to …. Shirley

Thanks Swifty. Brilliant reply!

At least we can now see what’s what in there.

Definitely need to go in from the back if possible. Do you know if the plate is available anywhere to buy?

The double skin but only goes so far down. Might be a faff but I reckon you could try pushing or pulling a new plate up and hold it whilst putting a bolt through plate and latch.

I presume you've poked a bit of welding wire up there to see if you can locate it and maybe dislodge it ?

Yes we’ve had a good old poke about. No sign of it sadly.

Dunno never tried but worth a go .. if you can pass a ye olde wire coat hanger down the B Post from the top area under the roof .. what that will achieve i have no idea but something might shift ?
other wise my mk2 Clubman has a square plastic cover that fits into the rear of B Post to cover the hole to get to that area ;)

Thinking my mk1 shell might have a square plastic cover too soon.

If you make the new plate a lot longer, you may be able to hold it in the pocket while you get the screws in

Minisprinter wrote: Mon May 08, 2023 9:49 am I've never done this but if the double skin bit only goes a certain way down then I would have thought the easiest way to do this would be to get a new plate a button a couple of studs the same thread as the plate and a length of fishing mono. Feed the mono through the central hole and down past the double skinned bit, then though the plate at the central hole, tie the button on the back then pull the plate up via the mono to roughly in position, screw the studs into the plate then slide the catch bit over the studs, to keep it where you need, then replace the studs with the proper screws, if you have enough tolerance in the body holes you may not need the studs but go straight to the screws, as long as you keep pressure on the mono the plate won't move. Once you have 2 screws in place you can remove the mono.

MS
Sounds easy enough in theory. However the plate retaining tabs are still there (not done a particularly good job I add), so it may prove tricky to get the new plate to sit flat.

Will have a good go when I’m up there on Wednesday evening. Thanks for the suggestion.

I have one of these that I use at times like this. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pickup-Tool-Fl ... ZDKR0ADC1X

If you make a new longer plate that is pre threaded with an additional' length as Gordon suggests, it should be possible.
