Gearbox swap

Hope this is ok - I've put this query up on projects too

I have an early 850 engine and gearbox (magic wand) sitting on the garage floor and I am about to take out a 998 from the Mini.

Can anyone tell me if the 850 gearbox will bolt directly onto the 998 block?

are there serial numbers somewhere on both boxes that I can find that might help

Thanks

P

There’s a few variables with gearboxes, flywheels and drop gears. As long as you use compatible parts you’ll be ok

If you can get the part numbers from both gearboxes (on the front behind the oil filter) that would be a good start

You'll need to ensure your 998 primary gear is compatible with the idler gear that you intend to use. They changed with the introduction of A+ engines and that won't run with the pre A-plus idler and the A-plus idler won't go in the pre A-plus bearing without conversion.

The primary gear on the 850 may also be incompatible with the 998 if you wanted to retain the drop gears. Early ones have a smaller ID than the post 1964 ones and the earliest have an oil fed bush..

Otherwise, should be reasonably straightforward if you're using all A Series post 1964 drop gears.
