Carb spacer positions

Hi all,
Recently got a set of refurbed carbs. I am unsure which side of the heat shield the carb spacers are supposed to go. I thought they should go behind (carb side) of the shield but it looks the like the shield will foul on the Maniflow branch I have on if the shield goes directly on the manifold. Does it make any difference or cause any issues if they are fitted like this (see below) instead?
