Casting Block Numbers

Hi

I have been trying to research the casting numbers for Blocks, Cylinder Heads and Gearboxes.

Looked in the Original Mini Cooper and Cooper S book by John Parnell to no avail. Is this information in the book? Or is there a link on this site for this information?

Thank you in advance.

Have a look in the search facility. There are pages and pages of info re casting numbers and how to interpret what the configurations relate to

Date codes on blocks read like this:

Assuming "S DD M Y" format of the block date code:

S = Shift. A=first, B=second
DD = one or two digit day-in-month
M=Month letter, see note below
Y=Year digit

So far, we have found photos/details of AEG312 blocks with all letters A through M except B,E,I.

I suspect letter "I" is skipped, so the resulting table would be:

A Jan
B Feb
C Mar
D Apr
E May
F June
G July
H Aug
J Sept
K Oct
L Nov
M Dec

Props to Paul Harris [TECH396] for the groundwork he did identifying sequences on other marques.

Thank you. A lot of research has gone into that list.
I am surprised that this information is not in the John Parnell book.

Kind Regards

It wasn't available when John wrote the book. It was only deciphered by our members iain1967s & TECH396 in the last year or so.

Also recently posted by NZmember is this comprehensive MiniSpares page which has extensive cylinder head casting history, and includes an original BL document “Date Standard for Ferrous Castings” at the bottom which shows the same scheme was still being used into the 70s/80s.

Copy attached.

When were the castings changed over to thick flanges?

I have a thin-flange block that appears to have a September 1967 casting date (engine is in the car so it is hard to read).

Sept 67 is the absolute last gasp of the thin flange block. I doubt there are any younger than that.
