2" Smiths tachometer need wiring diaghram

Has anybody seen one of these tach's and if so know
how to wire it up?

My guess is it is wired on positive side of the coil, so neg in and positive out and the connection in the middle is earth.
But, please wait for some one else to confirm either way, I am not completely sure....

What an odd thing, a Smiths face inside a VDO casing?
I have found a similar VDO gauge on fleabay which has a wiring diagram.
