Anybody got a technique for removing the idler gear needle roller bearing out of the clutch housing. I've had the housing as hot as I dare but still wont budge a source of a tiny heel bar might help

I think I have the puller for that if you fancy a ride over the moors ?

Cut it out with a Dremel tool.

I use a Small Grinding Wheel in a Dremel and with care grind the outer case until a small line appears in the outer wall & with a tap or two the remains of the bearing comes out .. grind onto the bearing wall with caution not to damage the ally case

Get yourself a set of blind bearing pullers, they are cheap as on the inter webs these days.

Prior to the above purchase a would drop a 3/8" nut into the bearing then carefully MIG weld the nut to bearing and use a 3/8" adapter I cobbled up on a side hammer to pop out the bearing.

What about using the old method we all used to use. If it's in a blind hole, fill the hole with grease and bang in the shaft that fits. The incompressible grease has nowhere to go so forces the bush or bearings straight out

You can do what Pete said, I got myself one of these. It's a Churchill blind bearing puller which is specifically made for removing these

No workshop should be without a set of these.

Warm the case up, put the bearing puller in, tighten it up & a couple of clunks & it's out.

Easy.

Dremmeling bearing cases out should always be an ABSOLUTE last resort when EVERYTHING else has been tried & failed.

I see a few recommendations to Dremel the bearing case out. I will share my two bits worth on that. I would be VERY careful if you choose this method. If you so much as nick the ally case, you WILL create an area for the newly pressed in bearing to distort. This WILL cause premature bearing failure. I wish someone told me this when I did this very thing in the early 70s. The right tool for the job is a blind bearing race puller and moderate heat.

I have been removing them for years by grinding the head of a large bolt round and a good fit into the bearing, I then weld the bolt to the bearing shell . Place a bar stock with a hole across the housing and over the bolt and draw the bearing out. After removing retaining ring for the outer support race I weld around the race inner dia. turn the housing over and it falls out. Steve (CTR)
