Hillclimb Tyre Choice

I'm not likely to be rallying much this year so I've entered a couple of Hillclimb events (Prescott and Yorkshire Motorsport) in the rally car.
I have a choice of Yokohama A032R and Avon CR6ZZ tyres (that I bought before the price rocketed!)
The relative merits of these tyres have been discussed before on here and for rallying, most people I know would favour the strong grippy Avons if their championship (and budget) allowed them.
However, for hillclimbing, I am wondering if the Yokohamas would be preferred.
My reasoning is mainly related to weight - the Yokohamas are probably half the weight of the Avons.
The weight saving (unsprung weight at that) should make for a quicker time and, the lighter tyre will warm up faster on the short course??

What are your thoughts guys?

Andy

I lent a set of Avon's to a competitor at Barbon and he was instantly snapping at the heels of his best ever times, despite the conditions being mediocre.

Make sure they're scrubbed before the event and warm them up before the start line. You'll get more grip off the line and the stiffer sidewalls will give you much better grip on the corners.

I've run both the Yokos and Avons, and I have to agree my choice would be the Avons. Especially when new, they are so grippy off the line that they really pay for themselves.

Sprints and hillclimbs are over so quickly that there's seldom much chance of warming the tyres on the course.

The Yokos always seem all over the place (see vid) if you’ve got Avons I’d use them. Everyone quicker than me is on Avons, that’s my excuse anyway!

Hi Andy ,
Just have track experience with both tyres , as said Avons should give quicker times , as Graeme pointed their stiff walls help a lot out of corners and reduce understeering .
They are more sensible with cold temperature than Yokos , warm them up as much as possible before startline.

Cheers
Luís

Another vote for Avons here despite the fact I can’t afford / refuse to buy a set @ £225 a corner!!
Look after them!

Can't believe the price of the Avons.. almost 4x the price of the yoks

It's a shame the nankang AR-1 aren't available in 10" (they are for 12's and 13's)
