it is all in the detail - carpet studs?

I was looking through some old pics of the early 64 car before it was dipped and spotted the front carpet mounts (example on left) are elevated on the front sill sections, and the mount itself is different from the replica ones we can now purchase. When sound proofing is under the carpet this makes complete sense - to elevate them.

Raising the studs was a very clever BMC/BL ploy Andy. Designed by a top engineer, it made a greater space between the top layer of the carpet and the bodyshell beneath which allowed a LOT more water to slosh around before you really got to notice. This water was partially absorbed by the cotton-waste type sound deadening. So after a few months you had a car that stunk like xxxx-house in a heatwave, a car that misted up with the moisture content of the carpet and for good measure, a rusty floor pan.

Here endeth the lesson.......
