Cooper S dynamo?

Did the Mk1 Cooper S have a different dynamo compared to lesser Minis? I recall that the main dynamo body had a step whereas the standard Mini ones were the same diameter the full length.

I have a 60s Lucas catalog that would answer this, but it is packed away from a recent move.

Anyone have info on this topic? Thanks.

Hi Michael7,

Try this link = http://forum.minicooper.org/showthread.php?t=15277 (genuine BMC press photos, of 1071 S engines)

Jens Christian

edit 23.38

just had a look at a 1966 genuine one owner MK I S,s and a 1967,
both have the same shape on the dynamo housing, as in the link above.

PS both cars, are unrestored.

Thanks for the reply Jens. In the upper photo, it looks like the dynamo is the type with a step down to the left of the ignition coil support. The lower photo is inconclusive in this regard.

I presume when you say the 2 cars with original dynamos that you looked at are consistent with the photo, you must be referring to the upper photo of the 1071 engine bays. Please confirm.

I agree, upper has a step, but the pics I have, does not show this detail, as the coil bracket is positioned,
so it covers the step (if its there?)
you need other owners, of unmolested cars, to step foreward.

I don't think there is such a rule about what type of dynamo fitted. I've seen them both (stepped & non stepped) on original cars. I've seen the 2 different types with the same month and year on it! What I think was different on a Cooper S, was the dynamo pulley - 3 5/8" iirc.
