Faster wipers??

Not used to car for about six months due a rebuild and came round to using the wipers a few weeks ago and they are terribly slow. Slower than I remember them to be.

I've checked, cleaned and lubricated the cable and box but it's not made that much difference. The motor is stamped 1967 so I'm thinking it's prob the original one from the car. The question is, can they be rebuilt/rewound to give a fast speed or do I need tolook into the Tr3 route with 2 speeds as per the works cars?

If so, is it a big job or a bolt on conversion?

I do use rainX as a addition so that does help a fair bit.

Did you check, that the boxes ran freely, when you had the cable, and arms off ?
The boxes sometimes "lock up" when not used, especially if there is no lubrication around the axle,
and its VERY hard to get lubrication in again, you need to remove them from the car, and use VD40, from the back, they need to run 100% free.

did you check the motor ? sometimes the bottom axle bearing dryes out, so it run slower.

have a word with mark

he bought a kit that gave him two speed wipers from a mk1 wiper motor from someplace.

I was shown a clever trick by an auto electrician who specialised in Minis. All he did was to adjust the voltage regulator up a bit so that the wiper motor was getting a little bit more power. It was surprising how effective it was.

Cheers Gents. The boxes and running gear (so to speak) run clear and well. I made sure that was right first. I've not checked the motor though.

Mark - what's this kit?

Ive considered trying a DC-DC covertor that will take the 12(ish)v and turn it into 15v, I'd guess 15v should give a decent speed but not kill the motor.

somthing like the JCK4012S15 here should do,

On a car with a generator and electromechanical regulator you could safely adjust the voltage up to 15v without a problem.

Mmmm yes 15V is great for your wipers & headlights, but not so good for your battery - they will take 14.8V MAXIMUM - any excess voltage will be absorbed by the battery and lost as electrolyte boiling off. I wouldn't recommend setting things to 15V.

cheers,

Yeah, fair enough I was forgetting my battery charging theory. 15V is OK when the battery is flat but it does need to tail off as the battery reaches a full charge.
