Hi folks,

I have a 69 Mk2 Super Deluxe which has benefitted prior to my ownership with a Newton Commercial retrim.

The main body of the interior is lovely, front seats, rear seat back, door cards etc, all great.

My main issue is with the rear seat base. It's just sat loose on the metal work, not fixed down at all. As i'm new to the older Mini i thought i'd ask the kind folks in here how the rear seat base should (or even if?) be fixed down.

The rear seat base cushion looks to be an oblong of furniture foam with the cover stretched and glued around it. No framework or hard edges anywhere. Should there be a framework of some description which is fixed through the two holes punched in the steelwork under where the front edge of the rear seat would sit? And should the seat be flush or sit inside that pre-formed rear lip?

I don't think that the Mk2 back seat had any sort of stiffener. Certainly on the ones I've had, the back seat squab bit just pushes into the rear under the upright and presses down into the plastic covered lip at the front of the seat pan. It just sort of fits into place. To take it out, it just pulls up, pull it forward - and out!

The seat base cover if it has been fitted properly will have some stiff card under the front leading edge , not just foam . This helps it keep its shape and once pushed into place should stay there ..... ken

There’s no stiff card in sight so it looks like I’m going to have to get creative to fashion up a securing solution

Seats and trim were manufactured locally by BMC Australia so this will not directly apply to the discussion, but may be of interest.

The rear seat squab had a steel rod frame, and was secured in place by a short threaded rod at either end that matched holes in the seat base, with wing nuts from underneath holding it down.
