Dizzy got a fair bit of slop in bushes........what are folks' opinions and suggestions of available replacements? (1380cc, big valve head, Piper 1BY etc).

Having just looked at broken distributors in some depth, have you ever considered simply boring through the worn bearing and replacing it. On the other hand, could it be a worn main shaft - or both! But I suspect that being a match set that's been there since pontius was a pilot, they're both worn.

If it was me replacing the main casing bearing I'd simply machine out the old and insert one made from bronze. Ream to suit the shaft.

I fitted a Swiftune CSI electronic distributor on my 8 Port and i am more than satisfied.

From what I remember, it is a none standard size, which would entail making the reamer as well.......

In my experience, the bushes/shaft give very little problem......I have found, most of the slop is in the centrifugal advance mechanism (even brand new from the factory)......for which, I developed a an easy fix.....

I pull this apart, accurately drill (you need a lathe for this) the cam part to take a standard thinwall bronze guide liner, which also requires a few thou skim on the part of the shaft that it sits on........

This mod when carefully done, gives the advance mechanism pretty much zero slop, plus, being bronze on steel, basically never wears out......

Have never heard of anybody else doing this, but, it is much easier, and, gives overall better results than messing with the main shaft and bearings......

ordered new vac. unit and will now investigate and consider the 'movement reduction' options.
