How does the Wingard pump work?

I have bought two one-way valves from Mini spares which I presumed I needed to make the wingard manual pump work.
However, I don't think it is anywhere close to being able to suck or push water through them as it seems a high pressure is needed to make the valves work.
Can anyone tell me how the washer system was set up originally, and/or can you still get the valves?

AFAIK there's no valve required.

You only need the valve on the hand push pumps, not needed on electric pumps...

It is a hand push one, but if they ever had an internal valve then mine is broken!
I just need no-resistance one way valves!

I don't think any of the hand push ones ever had valves in them.....
There were a few different valve styles, one has a foot valve in the bottle at the bottom of the pickup tube, and, either one of two different styles of inline valve that went just bellow the T to the squirters...
Another had the foot valve, and a T that had the valve inside it.....
In any case, you need two valves for the system to work......

Not an expert here, but the only way I could make mine work was to use two check valves. One check valve opens to flow from the reservoir toward the pump and the other opens to flow from the pump to the jets. It seems to just be a very simple piston pump with no valving of any kind. I believe you can connect either hose/check valve to either port on the back...
Edit: Just looked at mine and it is just the one check valve in the line from the reservoir

The pump is a simple rubber bellows. I always found that you needed to prime the tube from the foot valve in the bottle to the pump before it behaves as it should.

A one way valve was originally inside the T piece and a plastic mesh filter/pick up was fitted inside the washer bottle. The pump itself is just a bellows, and requires priming or it will never pick up the water.

As 850man has said above, the T-piece (part number 24A1388 originally, but now superceded - see a Mini parts supplier for details) has a valve incorporated so water remains in the tubes to the jets. In the washer bottle was a small inline valve to stop water draining back into the bottle. In Australia on later cars was a filtered pick-up with valve.

Thanks all.
The Mini spares valve is called the 'wingard version' of the in bottle valve in the photo, but as I said they are both quite hard (I certainly can't suck through them with my mouth

).
I will have a go with the aquarium ones.
