I have been told that a AEG163 casting head never looked like this- does anyone have any history? Is it simply not a very late 163?

I’ve one like that if it helps? Virtually identical to my one where the push rod’s holes cut part of the number away.

Looks ok to me, same markings as this:

Looks like the port face might have been skimmed a bit, or the head has been ported, as the inlet manifold locating ring recesses are not visible. So if you’re using a manifold that needs locating rings, maybe add some jbweld on the manifold end to keep them in position.

ps those concave cam follower / lifter covers with butyl seals are mid 1966 or later. Earlier Mk1 had convex covers with cork gaskets.

It's just a later head casting
