Minis were never sold in Australia under the Austin name, they were all badged as Morris's.

The very early 850's were CKD's from the UK, however, they weren't many of these. They had a Chassis Prefix of YMA2S1. The locally manufactured cars had a Chassis prefix of YMA2S3. There were made from a high local content, including most of the body panels.

A Google search shows NMP to be Nuffield Metal Products. Does your plate look like this?

CKD stands for Complete Knock Down. This means that all or most parts needed to build a car are shipped in pieces to another location where they are assembled. For Minis built in Australia CKD kits were sent from the UK initially until BMC Australia was in a position to manufacture its own components.

However, were there not Made in Oz Minis shipped to and sold in NZ with Austin badging?

If so, did they still carry YMA chassis numbers?

Cheers, Ian

Many UK built early MK1's had NMP front panels. I have been told these were mainly Cowley built cars, but have never seen any evidence of this.

Yes, they did badge Minis and Mokes as Austins for other markets. I'm not sure on the Chassis prefix, logic suggests it should be a YAA, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if they retained the YMA.

Does the car made in other countries do not have this plate is attached?

Cars with NMP front panels could have been exported as CKD, but it is unlikely that any non UK built cars would have had this particular front panel.

Nuffield Metal Products as Doug as already confirmed.
The only NMP plated cars I have seen in Australia have been English built cars imported from New Zealand, or maybe even the one South African Mini that we look after.

Isn't it conclusive proof that the car with the "NMP" panel is made in the UK?

Do you know the characteristics of the New Zealand model?

"Conclusive proof" is certainly pushing it a bit.

"Likely" is about as high as I'd push it!

I'd never claim conclusive proof of anything about early Minis!

Perhaps some more photo's of the car concerned would help in identification :)
