S recliner 'spring rod'

Hi folks,
Got an old recliner frame which is missing the 'spring rod'. Seat back stays perfectly rigid in all tested reclined positions. What is the purpose of the missing spring rod? (don't want to recover seat and then find that the spring rod is essential!). [see photo of rod in position on another seat]
