Engine paint .. 2k or synthetic enamel

So correct shade engine paint is accepted as Mid Bronze green 223.

I'm torn between using synthetic enamel, as I've always used, or 2K which I haven't, on an engine/box.

From experience synthetic deteriorates fairly quickly over the years (although I guess there are good and not so good brands) and the engine ends up looking old and tired and in need of repainting.

I am tempted to use 2K over a 2k etch this time but may go with a good quality (HMG) synthetic.

Any thoughts or experience on the longevity of 2k on an engine in a car thats actually driven and used ?

Yep, 2K on engines is totally fine. It doesn’t discolour, shrink or burn off in my experience on either cast iron or aluminium, just a light dusting of aerosol etch underneath. Prefer to use PPG or Max Meyer over HMG etc as it seems easier to get a decent result(Probably more related to my lack of skill and facilities)

Andrew,

I asked HMG what I would be best using on a cast iron petrol engine. They didn’t suggest 2K. Their technical department will have answers as to the pros and cons of the two systems and I have found them very helpful (they even matched some Tartan Red no 1 in 2K for me).

Thanks Matt and David,

I've got both in two shopping baskets ... which do I checkout .. I've never been so undecided

Now if one was made in China, it would be so much easier to decide

Just found a pic of the 2k painted engine being fitted that we discussed Andrew. It was a bit later than I recalled as it was 6 April 99.

20 years is a reasonable test still ;-)

I'm not a 'paint guy' however, I understand that the faster drying enamels are the ones that don't last too well. Those that take a day or 2 are much better.
