22G333 Gearbox restore
I bought this gearbox as part of a 1071 S engine job lot some time ago. Due to other projects, customer projects etc never got round to doing anything with it and the 1071 S engine for that matter.
So I have sold some of my own cars and projects (still regret selling my Station wagon some months ago) and now have some time to look at this with some new enthusiasm.
The box as taken out of it's long nap on the shelf....

Diff and other bits starting to come off.
Looking somewhat better after a paraffin cleanup...
The number 1 visible from this side.

As the strip down commenced it became very apparent that the box had been removed from an engine that most likely spun some bearings as the fine left overs was seen everywhere.
So first mainshaft items
Reverse idler
Soaking in paraffin some more to ensure proper oil and junk removal.

Looks like you have a cracking box there!
They must be fairly rare in SA.
I look forward to seeing it brought back to it's former glory.

Hi Mark
You are right unfortunately MOST Cooper and Cooper S parts in SA is extremely scarce no matter what it is. I have been playing around with Clubman 1098 and 1275 and 1275 GTS and round nose cars and parts since about 2003, never really bothered with a Cooper or Cooper S for that matter till I literally lost a 1275 Cooper S bolt and nut restoration job, because I did not own nor have I worked on a S...... That was about 5 years ago now.
So when the 1071 stuff came up for sale I bought it. Since then I have slowly been collecting S stuff for myself and now can choose from quite a hoard of parts ito engine and gearbox items.

Re: 22G333 Gearbox restore
Looks to be in great condition based on the lack of abuse on the 1st/reverse that they usually suffer
Is there a month/year date stamped on the bottom of the sump? Maybe around 1965 at a guess [yokes and smaller idler].

Hi Iain
From what I can tell you so far, after a good bit of elbow grease and copious amounts of de-greaser later...
The casing is a Q one
A 447 in a square near the drain plug and another stamping which I cannot make out.
And a T right next to the diff housing on the bottom...
and this S also on the bottom
Much better

Re: 22G333 Gearbox restore
Other markings that I have seen/identified is 3rd gear is 22A983
Laygear shims is 22A761 and 22A763
Laygear is the 22G1100 variety
G stamped on input idler
22G95 on 3/4 syncro
One weird thing I did realize is that the pinion has 18 teeth and the crown wheel has 64 teeth (counted it 3 times to make sure) so seemingly final drive was 3.55 which is very interesting indeed.

Re: 22G333 Gearbox restore
Don't think they were ever a matched pair from the factory - maybe someone has previously swapped stuff?
Is there a part number on the crownwheel (hidden under the locktabs may be)?

I am also working on a 333 box here and my final drive is 18/62. Also had to count it several times and use a paint marking to make sure. I guess that is 3.44 which is standard?

Yes Graeme you were correct when I cleaned the crownwheel up I did find 22A401 and below that 17/64, so to calc that means 3.76 final drive supposed to be, but yes most probably box has been changed up and messed with at some point in the oh last 50 or so years....
Gary yes easy calc to find final drive is 62 divided by 18 then you do get 3.44 correct you are.
Fanfaniracing I went through the forum looking for a rebuild of such a gearbox and could not find something so yes wanted to document this box and it's contents so pleasure for doing so.

Re: 22G333 Gearbox restore
I'd suspect that someone has thrown a new diff in there at some point and lazily not changed the crownwheel over.
