Anyone have any info on what engine size and models they were used on?

Have tried a search but not much luck.

Hi Harry,

22A1522 were used on last of the 3 synch Minis including S boxes.

My '68 998 Cooper has one.

I also have a NOS 22A1522 casing but with an ADO16 remote diff housing so presumably the ADO16 had them too

So it would they have started using them on the 's' models?

I stand to be corrected Harry, but I believe the last of the 3 synch S boxes were 1522's not 333, probably in Mk2 not Mk1.

No such thing as a 22G1522, assume you mean 22A1522 ?

When I was trying to pin down the correct box to use for my car last year, I made the following notes:
22A1522 came in to replace 22G333 [cooper S] and 22A1288 [850/998] around mid 1967

22A1522 had a short production life, it was replaced by 22G1128 the first of the 4 synchro in late 1968

22G846 was used for the final remote 4 synchro cars in 72/73

22G1832 was the first rod-only box in early 1973

Note that 22G846 was produced as both a remote and a rod casting, first used on Elf/Hornet it is found throughout early 70s cars especially on 998 CKD/exports, so possible it was used alongside both the 22G1128 remote and the 22G1832 rod as a second source / manufacturer.
So I think 22A1522 was used in the last of the 1967 Mk1 minis and first of the 1967/68 Mk2 minis [ including Cooper S ], and is also found on ADO16 of that period with a sandwich diff but lower ratio final drive.

This is also useful for identifying usage.

Not sure that's right where it says the last Cooper S 3 synchro box. It was not 22A1288 but a 22A1522

The 1288 Box was definitely used on Cooper S during the 68 model year, right up to the introduction of the 1128 4 Syncro box.

Not sure it was. My Jan 68 S has a 15A1522, which according to Minispares, is correct.

The 1288 was for non-S - Source minispares

There are numerous known original examples of the 1288 gearboxes being used in the Cooper S. I've done some extensive research on these boxes because I was also in doubt.
I'm with the opinion that the 1522 box was used during introduction of the MK2 in late 67 till early 68. It's at that point where the 1288 box appears in the Cooper S.
In my search, I've come across 12 known original cars with the later 1288 box and Spicer diff. It seems to start showing up around Feb or March 68.
8 of then are in North America, 3 in the UK and one in Belgium.
It's not uncommon to see the 1288 box in the S.
It's been discussed several times on this site.

The important fact is the 1288 is a wide box i.e it will allow a 1275 to clear the side of the gearbox. So looking at the charts, if it was a one off why fit it to 988? some of these charts can pass mistakes on. So of the 3 boxes 333 1522 1288 they were the 3 sychro boxes capable of taking the larger engines, so reconditioned boxes like the goldseal could use either if castings got short, that could logically apply to the factory too?
So 1288 could have been fitted to S.
People often loose sight that while today many S are high value show queens in period they may have had a hard life even just autotests etc . Often in fact they would be changed to 4 synchros, I certainly did.
In periods when S needed beefing up straight cuts could be fitted to either of the s boxes and were
I always understood it the 333 was the least beefy. Untill 4 sychro straight cuts eventually came along racers were still using 3 sychros straight cuts.

Today people want the security of a 333 box to make the car "genuine", 50 years ago it was a different story. If a genuine S today had had a goldseal 1288 casting does it suddenly become non genuine? One for radio 4 listeners!

hi, I am trying to help identify a guy's engine on the Mini Italia facebook group.
It is a 12A engine and has a 12A661P2 twin inlet manifold,it has the two tappet covers and the gearbox casting number is 22A1680, the gearbox has some lever attached to an spring loaded actuator which I haven't seen yet.
Any ideas what engine this could belong to?

My spare mk1 “s” engine has the 22a1288 gearbox and it is painted gold , so I’d agree and say it would be a period replacement.
