Chaps,
I am not at all into engine numbers, but have now come across two numbers that mystify me.
They are 'AE 23R7' and 'ND 240' and are supposedly of Cooper S engines fitted to, you guessed it, one and the same Mini derivative in different periods.
Anyone out here who may shine a light on these numbers?

'AE' is a brand of an engine parts company, could they have offered reconditioned engines at some point (long shot), as for the other number no idea, again someones own numbers for a job number, I know Oselli often used the customer name and a number sequence for their work

they are probably just numbers stamped onto the engines to give them an 'i.d' for registration purposes.

i have owned minis in the past where the v5 said 'not known' in the engine number box, but i would think that this wouldnt be acceptable if the number was missing when a vehicle went through an inspection to be registered correctly for the road.

all the paper work i have for my gtm has little 'dvla' rubber stamps showing that stuff like this was inspected.

dont forget that the engine number correctley matching the number shown on the v5 would decide (in part) if a 'kit-car' was able to use a doner vehicles number plate, got issued a 'q' plate, or if everthing was new, could be registered as a new built vehicle.

obviously the above relates to the decent time, when you could build kit cars etc, not now with the sva etc

But do you think the numbers mentioned are of two different engines? The thing is that this car is said never to have anything else fitted to its engine bay then the engine that it came with when built in 1961.

if it was built in 1961 it must have had an 850 originally, rather than an s motor, so its had at least one change!

Can anyone throw any light on the sequence/meaning of the extra digits that appear in engine numbers. On the one enclosed (Recon Mk3 S) the AA has been stamped in addition to the embossed number and it apppears in many engines stamped into the block or head. Did AA (or similar) refer to a process of checking or a particular individual or what ?
