So my question is if a car has the early snail shell blower under the bonnet what type of heater would be inside?.

Its the first type of fresh air heater.

Big square tin box in the usual heater position. Snail blower under the bonnet and two control knobs.

Only fitted for about a year or so in '62 and '63 so quite a rare item.

The best heater I've had in a mini !

Ah that's what I thought, what got me thinking was flicking through Robert Young's new book shows the 1071s 569FMO with the under bonnet blower but what looks like the later heater in the car, so what was the idea behind this arrangement?

In 64 the snail was used in conjunction with a model of the later type heater yet without the fan in the side, as it's already in the snail. The opening in the side where the motor would sit is blanked off by a plate spot welded in.

So it would depend on the year of the car Nick

Yes I agree , I have had a car with the snail heater and under bonnet fan, can’t remember the year but I know it was a pain to work on as it was a bit cramped under the bonnet. I think the KW rating of the heater was higher with the under bonnet fan. Export or Cold territories spec ?

I can supply one of the type described by Toby, as I bought such a heater from him a few years ago.

Yes - IIRC someone showed a picture a while back.

Yes, there was a 2 amp motor, and, a 4 amp motor.......

I used to take the motor out of the Snail, drill out the 3 spotwelds on the blanking plate, and, installed the motor right in the heater box.....

With the 4 amp motor, this gave much better de-frost......
