Role reversal?
Mini faster down the straights and Escort faster through the corners
Mini brakes out of balance? seem to be locking up

Looks odd, the Escort catches the mini into a corner? Can't see the tach, but I think the Escort has too high a rear axle ratio. There is certainly no problem getting the right gearbox ratios for an Escort, with a Mini it's take what you get.

Could well be. In period the TC Escorts were much faster with the fuel injection 1300GT cars being about equal with the Minis. Escorts had a lot of grip as well.
Meanwhile, the late David Leslie has superb tussle with an 'S'.

That's more what you would expect between a mini and a large engined rwd saloon.

Bit of a tangent, but I was reading an old Motoring News event report the other day, must've been '70 or '71, and Will Sparrow in his 8-port had spent several sections running close to the Twin Cam of Jimmy Bullough - and Will was surprised to find that he was quicker in a straight line but slower in the corners.

The TC was okay, but you really needed the 16 valve BDA RS1600. The Lotus twin cam was fairly limited with two valves per cylinder.
