Searching through stuff I found this today - quite a good reference shot. It appears to be on a jig of some kind, for testing perhaps?
Does anyone put any kind of padding on top these days?

I think that is set up on the line, the front subframe will be on the dolly in front of it, just waiting to mate up with a body.....

That's a great reference piece. I've never noticed the use of the two spool mounts and bracket for the tailpipe before.
I'm planning on putting my padding back, I saved my original stuff. The body wasn't rotting at those locations on my car.
It looks to be jigged & ready to "marry" to the body

Yes, the two hydro pipes heading north in the pic must be attached to something and not swinging in the wind. A front subframe is the obvious answer.
I'll add to the request for a pic of the front subframe dolly.

It is part of a sequence of pictures of a pre-production build.

That photo is in one of the Mini books, the one with 33EJB on the cover from memory.
Edit - Mini Rob Golding.

So looks like the rear silencer was black from the factory

It's a very early wet car as it still has a non-damped gearstick.

Yes Nick, it is a pre-production set up from Feb - March 64 as far as I can recall. That's why there is no positive crankcase ventilation etc. It may even be a 1071??
I see it has been posted already but here is the front picture, slightly out of focus on the original photograph due to depth of field in relatively low light.

These photographs are fantastic reference material. Any chance that the original source could be scanned at high resolution and made available somewhere? I don't believe I have ever seen them anywhere else.
So this is just a setup for a prototype hydro build I presume? No way they did production this way...
The rear brake drums suggest this is a non-S Cooper I would think.

The picture is the right way up, the pipes go up the front face, and ,over top of the rear subframe......

Gary, you would be surprised how crude the ealy Mini production line was.......
Looks like a 998 Cooper (90 degree mounted heater valve), with the later airbox (but, not chopped for the brake cylinder), probably late 64ish.....

I was told at the time is was an S but you are right about the drums causing doubt Gary. Or they may have said Cooper and I jumped the gun.
Sometime around the early to mid 90s I was researching my Feb 64 car as I also had a pile of bits from a 970 and was confused as to what went with what.
Long story short, gaydon responded with an invite to visit along with pics of my shell etc - memory is flakey but I think they were restoring AJB 44B. They let me photograph bits and I was rather cheeky and took pics of some of the photos they had out.
My Research timeline was Jan - March 64, hence I am fairly confident on the dates.

It looks like a 998 Cooper unit...it has the old style remote noisy gear lever. Top rad hose is the style for the non S engine too.
The silencers were black back then...and were welded together.......still have the original one off my 64 1071.
Also, interesting...no MOWOG on the rear crossmember!

Dermott , Do you know if the silencers were black on all the MK1 Cooper range ??

The CV nuts appear to be the smaller inch and 3/16" which would also confirm Cooper, Not S.
