A quick and hopefully a simple question.
How easy is it to remove chrome plate from say a window surround, non mini, so that it can be painted.
I don’t believe that paint would stick too well to chrome plate?

IIRC de-chroming would be an (electro-)chemical process, done by a galvaniser.

An alternative would be to have the bits vinyl wrapped rather than painted.

Another option is to sand the chrome back to the copper base coat, and then use an etch primer to key into that.

That was one of the thoughts I had originally, plenty of elbow grease needed. Assumed that it would have to go back to bare metal but good if not.

Gary take them to the chrome platers , they will remove the old chrome ect and i would think it would cost very little .

I attacked the bumpers on Tubbs with a twisted cup wire brush, etch primed and painted them black in 2005/6 and they’re still good.
Now Clubbie estate bumpers are more robust than a window surround, but I also did the rear lamp units with sandpaper and they’re still good too (which is more than can be said for the rest of the car...). The headlamp surrounds on Gertie were bead blasted before painting.

The factory often just painted over the chrome direct to get black bits.

Iain has the right idea, all you need to do is abrade the chrome and then hit it with an etch primer.

Most custom paint shops will have run into this in the past, painting over chrome is quite common.
