Quick question on rear sub frame mounting pins.

I am just trying to figure out how to assemble the rear subframe with all my new goodies!

Starting with the mounting pin for the front of the rear subframe, you put one side of the bush on, then the trunnion, then the other half of the bush.....
When I do this, the mounting pin still has a little of the wider radius part of its shaft showing, does another large washer (same diameter as the pins head) fit over this to help support the bush, or does it get put into the sub frame as it is, then a smaller washer and nut?

Also a cheeky quicky, are front and back trunnions both the same (i.e. unequal length bolts), or should one have two equal length mounting bolts into the shell like later cars?

As always, thanks!

Ed

From memory the pin has three radiuses. The middle sized one should seat in the subframe.

The mounts changed in 1976 so if yours is earlier
both front and rear should be same and you should have two piece bushes all round.

I think it would with or without a large washer.
Without one the bush will spread around the narrower face of the frame.

Cheers on the trunnion!

There are no additional washers.

Is the subframe new and/or powder coated or freshly painted? Sometimes the pins can get a little tight if the hole is reduced slightly with paint or similar.
Try assembling it without the bushes/trunion and you should be able to see where one of the shoulders on the pin should sit hard against the frame - it is this that controls the crush on the bushes.

Use some rubber grease when you fit the bushes, will help it all to bed in nicely and the trunnions will be able to turn on the bushes to help lining up to the body.

The Nyloc nut is done up tight and as said before the shoulder on the pin determines the crush on the bushes.

Right, I just went and did that.
There is a shoulder between the threaded end of the pin and the first of the 3 radii, it is that shoulder which stops the pin when it hits the inner part of the subframe when the bushes are removed.
It would have to be done up very tightly for that to happen with the bushes, and if done, the middle radius would sit in the outer hole of the frame.
Even then, the widest radius part is still 2mm from the outer hole of the frame, and it is the only part which could sit hard against the OUTER part of the frame.
So unless my pins are incorrect (highly possible) it is the middle radius which sits in the outer hole, and it is not possible to tighten it enough to get the largest radius shoulder to tighten up against the outer part of the frame.

So, if there are definitely no additional washers then I shall proceed.
But if the outer largest radius is supposed to crush against the outer part of the frame, then I need to fill that 2mm gap with a washer.

Sorry, I know this is tedious but I have done my best to improve on standard , and this mounting system undermines all fine tuning!

And again, I hope this makes sense.

Just seen the post from Andrew, if the shoulder is the one on the inner part of the frame, then thanks, all is clear!
