Gear Stick anti rattle Spring Q

Ref; Early type Remote Tunnel Gear Lever within its lower location socket .. my thoughts are there should be a light coil "Spring" that is located under the Cream Nylon Cup ( split bush) that the Gear Lever lower Ball locates into.. I look at a early Haynes Manual and that shows there are Two Springs in that location .. my cast socket located on the long shift rod has a flat bottom that can locate such a push upward Spring but i have no Spring fitted in this area .
Q what Spring should be located under the Gearstick Ball Nylon Cup at the lowest point as i cannot see that the major parts suppliers list these Spring(s)

I don't know about such a spring but if a rattling shift lever is the issue, the reason is the nylon cup is loose in the recess in the linkage. Wrap a layer of aluminum metal from a beer or soft drink can around the cup and the rattling stops. At the moment, I need to redo this in my Traveller.

Here are all the components of the early remote

Note the plastic cup is not the later ‘split’ type you mention
In the second image the cup and spring are repro items.

Lakeland .. interesting as you show 1off under side push up spring for the Ball Cup ..yet Haynes Manual show 2 off Springs under the Cup.. looks like there is more than one version of BMC component parts within an early Remote Gear Change system .. whatever at least i know i need a coil Spring (or Two).. many thanks :D

That’s interesting. I never heard of two springs.
Spring part number here is 2A3890

BMC sold a "anti rattle button kit" that had two springs and a white plastic button for a dollar.

Maybe the single spring is factory as built correct.

Just an FYI my 64 cooper S has two springs. I have not tested, but they 'feel' to have different rates of compression. Also It is a factory left hand drive car.

Who is reproducing the nylon cup?

Thanks

I often find the remote alloy housing is worn where the shaft runs through it, usually due to lack of maintenance/no grease. This causes the gearstick to rattle. Line boring the housing and having bronze bushes fitted, along with fitting grease nipples to the front & rear usually cures the rattle.
And yes, a spring belongs below the nylon cup under the gearstick, and another cup/spring should be fitted in the selector knuckle joint above the diff housing. The 2 bronze bushes in the diff housing should also have no play.

850man .. can you explain further info on this Spring that you mention should be located in the area of the Knuckle Joint above the diff housing ?
