I know it was badly crashed on the 1966 RAC Rally but does it still exist ?

Thank you for the most useful additional evidence that indicates the final fate of this reg. no. Based on the works track record, it seems likely to have been a new car between the RAC and Swedish (we are trying to indicate the works' normal route of starting with a complete standard car by referring to "car" rather than "shell") but, as in so many cases, it is difficult to rule out a temporary reg. no. swap. Of course, there was already a precedent in 66 for new cars for the Swedish. Smaller versions of the photo seen elsewhere do not indicate the full extent of shell distortion.

We shall have to give some consideration to any legal risks to the forum from possible copyright infringements of posting future photos that are not "owned" by posters.

We are aware emoticons can have slightly different meanings internationally and UK users should not necessarily take offence at any appearing here from the welcome members who may be more used to other forums.

t seems most unlikely that the same car was repaired after the severe damage on the RAC and then only scrapped after the Swedish. A number plate swap for the Swedish looks to be a possibility and the “writing off” was the car as it ended its RAC outing.

Of course it was a replacement bodyshell for the Swedish rally. It had a very hard time on the Swedish with some big moments and would have needed another new shell.

German Rally May 66. Hopkirk/Nash. Retired. (Hopkirk's entry originally refused by the organisers because of disparaging comments he made about the 65 event and only accepted after a written apology).

Gulf London Rally June 66. Hopkirk/Crellin. Retired. (This was the event on which Fall destroyed DJB93B). As a non SMMT recognised event, these were technically not “works” entries and the cars were “borrowed” by the drivers. There was BMC service for them (unlike Ford) and Fall nearly won.

Coupe des Alpes Sept 66. Aaltonen/Liddon. 3rd. Despite the good result, this was the event on which it became clear the 1293 S was now being outclassed on dry tarmac by Alfa Romeo and Ford (BMC using Dunlop racers but Ford running on Goodyear road tyres as Goodyear racers were not yet suitable for rallies). May have been a new car.

RAC Rally Nov 66. Lampinen/Ambrose. Retired. A new car if it wasn't on the Alpine? It certainly wasn't after it rolled badly on the first leg in Wales. Judging by the collapse of the n/s A post it was as well that 7 of the 8 BMC entries were now fitted with an Aley bar.
(If the GRX309D used by Fall on the Welsh 3 weeks later was the same Hill RAC car, the replacement engine/transmission it would have required may well have been from JBL495D, as that car by retiring early had the least mechanically damaging RAC).

Swedish Rally Feb 67. Aaltonen/Liddon. 3rd.

Written off.

It seems most unlikely that the same car was repaired after the severe damage on the RAC and then only scrapped after the Swedish. A number plate swap for the Swedish looks to be a possibility and the “writing off” was the car as it ended its RAC outing.

Thanks for the information.
I have two of the wheels and tyres from the crashed 1966 RAC rally JBL 495D.
I was hoping to be able to reunite them with the car.

Nick

Jack Kemsley (Mr RAC Rally) second from right holding clock? Sally Kemsley (daughter and later Mrs Chris Sclater) holding paperwork?

Jack Brabham flagged off the first cars but he seems to have already gone (after witty repartee with NGH and JC who were both part of that year's "publicity seeding").
