gear knob thread

I'm playing about with my wood lathe and thought I might try knocking up a few gear knobs.
Does anyone know what thread the top of the gear lever has? so I can buy the correct inserts rather than using a 'universal' fit bit of rubber tube.

5/16" UNC on all mine.

Corerect 5/16 UNC, only most Mini gear lever knobs had an unthreaded rubber insert in them not a thread as such, I assume this was to reduce vibration, or was more likely just a bit cheaper

having bought a tap set, I'm going to have a go at tapping the hardwood itself rather than using an insert, with a 1/2 nut as a lock below the knob.
who'd have thought the colective nown for gearknobs would be kebab?, as in "ah Dad, I see you've made a kebab of gear knobs" !

Nice one - how about simply drilling a small hole in the side of the base and securing using a grub screw?
(some nice designs on your kebab there!)

Could you do a stock Mk1 shaped knob in Derlin and cut a thread in to it?
If so put me down for two...

Looking into this stuff, I'm not sure it'll turn by hand, it seems to need a high turning speed, so an engineering lathe rather than a wood lathe I'm afraid

Well, if you're going to cut some from Delrin, maybe you could engrave this shift pattern on it:
I figure it would make a great anti-theft device.

What on earth is that off? You'd have to have your wits about you driving that.

I have no clue what it was from. Snagged the picture off a fleabay auction years ago... unfortunately, didn't see it till after the auction ended. I would've paid silly money for it.

pre war MGs are hard enough, with 1st and 2nd where 3rd and 4th 'should be' and vice versa.
but I think i've seen one like the above before, a '70's christmas stocking filler novelty, just like the genuine Arthur Daley motors dealer sticker and tax disk holder that was in my mum's Aqua coloured Mk3 1000 when we bought it.
quality!
