Getting the rights bits ...

I'm collecting all the running gear parts to grit blast for HOY and have some questions to get the right bits .. March 65 build

1 - Which type of rear handbrake bracket - see photo - Answered by PM
2 - The original front displacers (completely shot) had what looks like a taller knuckle joint 'cone' - is this correct for an early car and if it is, I presume I can just fit them into the replacement displacers ? The photo demonstrates the difference.
3 - Rear struts ... this has been discussed before but with no definitive answer - how long should they be ? I have some that are 9.75" long but I'm sure there are some earlier, shorter ones ? I have the earlier shorter coil rebound springs.
4 - Drive shafts for a rubber coupling S - should they be the ones with the band on them or the plain ones ? Answered by PM

I have a May ‘65 “S” now converted to dry but have the displacers.

Front length of tube from base 1.625 “

Rear strut 273 mm or 10.75 “

The change point was Morris RHD 820705 on & Austin 829417 on

My car is in the 730000 s so the displacers and struts represent the early set up.

Which answer did you get on the handbrake brackets? As there appears to be some discussion about them

Hi David,

Thanks for the post and pics. That measurement tallies with the cones that are in the u/s displacers I took out of HOY.

Do you have one of the rears with the strut out ? Was wondering if the cone length is the same at the back, without the strut.

I will measure what I have to see if it agrees with your findings with the strut fitted.

Hi Toby,

It's the larger brackets that are needed - changed early 65 according to Simon W. :)

What was the answer to number 4? I think it should be the plain type - ie no band.

Yep, the plain, non-banded type for our cars :D

I’ll try and knock it out tomorrow. Displacers were the same front and back on the early cars so the cones should be the same.

Just read this on another thread, posted by Spider back in 2017 ...

The different length struts were used with the early & late displacers. If I recall right, the shorter ones were used with the earlier displacers (the ones that are set further down the body).

Better check this out too.

Andrew,

Rear strut is 230 mm (9 inches) and the dowel is a splined press fit in the cone. The cone is the same as the front unit.

The splines were clearly to stop the dowel jumping out of the cone but as you can see didn’t work particularly well when confronted by rust. Lots of heat and a big hammer to get this far. More heat and the spring emerged.

Splined dowel ... that's a new one :shock:

So, the struts are a different length on the earlier cars .. I still haven't been able to locate mine yet - if you saw my garage at the moment you'd understand why :o It wont be any use other than as a confirmation of length and I have some re-plated longer ones I can machine down.

I have found three of the longer length cones, hopefully the other will turn up. I had all four displacers with the car and its probably stuck on the strut ..
