Engine number - what does the U mean

8 AM U H 12345
8 AM = Austin & Morris 850
H = high compression
But what does the U mean ?

Think it means center shift.....

Thanks chaps, that what I remembered from way back.
I wonder what was NOT centre shift, unless its column shift.
Did older BMC cars have column shift ?

Just to confuse the issue this is taken from the transverse power unit parts book. Some interesting combinations there!
Some of the bigger BMC models had column change options - A60s, Oxfords, etc.

U is for magic wand gear change
SA is remote gear change I think
