Good Afternoon,

Newbie alert! I'm a little confused about the oil cooler situation on my 1967 1275S 'S' engine bay. It Doesn't have one... which in my first thoughts and research, suggest it to be wrong. However on inspection of other Cooper 'S' engine bays, not all have oil coolers?

Is there definitive information as to which years, which models have oil coolers to try and work out if mine should?

The early cars were sometimes fitted with an optional cooler (confirmed on the Heritage certificate) that would have been the vertical style.
The front mounted cooler was implemented as standard equipment at the same time the RH tank ...Jan. 66 Body # 47681.
As your car is a 67..it should have the front mounted cooler.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply. Really appreciate it. Top info. My next questions would be; 1) is there fitting instructions for one of those or is it as simple as it looks i.e. mount the cooler; 1 pipe in the gearbox case and the other in the filter? and 2) The oil cooler will naturally effect the oil capacity in the engine/gearbox - is this taken into account in the service manual's "4.83l" or will the overall oil capacity be 4.83l + capacity of cooler?

The latter bit of information (to be honest) could/will be found out when I get and fit the cooler, so not an issue if you're not too sure.

The lip of the grill opening needs to be flattened to mount an oil cooler. You also need a diagonal grill opening brace. There are 2 braces that rivet to the front valence that support the cooler. It would be nice to get original lines that have end fittings with the correct orientation.

Without going to the car I can't visualise what is there already. I'll certainly investigate those mods (if needed) and parts though. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

The oil cooler is attached between the front panel and the front subframe using two L shaped brackets, which position it just forward of the front panel opening so it butts up against the back face of the grille. You need to fold down the lip on the front panel to give enough clearance, so the cooler doesn't foul on the distributor cap.

If you use origina/repro Petroflex style hoses, a pair of threaded adapters are screwed into the block and the filter head casting. If you use the modern Mocal etc. version, the hoses thread in to the castings directly without needing adapters.

I bought the Petroflex repro kit from nippycars of this parish, as it's very close in appearance to the original that was on my car.

It takes approx 5.1 liter oil in total with the filter, cooler, galleries and pipes, to get up to the max fill line on a new build.

I've just bought Nippy Cars' repro cooler and pipes. The product says that the brass fittings are correct, which suggests I wouldn't need adapters (?) but I'll wait and see.

I might ask them, or anyone on here, if they've got any pictures of how it looks from the inside, to gauge the angles of the bracing (mine's currently vertical), bending and bolting that's going to ensue.

Have just found a good exploded diagram on one of the parts manuals people have usefully scanned.

Would anybody have the dimensions for the grille spaces? I can't seem to find any to buy, so may have to turn them? Thanks in Advance.
