Water/dust shields from wheel bearings at the rear of the hub

Ok, to be fitted to the drive shaft before they slide through the front hub. I.e drive shaft - seal - inner hub?
Thanks

They fit up on the CV Joint where the Seal wipes.

For them to be proper effective, they need to be used with a particular type of seal though.

They are just a Dust seal, and, should be installed dry...........The grease is for the bearings, not the seal......or the Dust shield...

I think the 'particular type of seal' Spider refers to have a small lip on the outside face (around the ID) that the shield locates onto

Cheers Graeme

This is the lipped seal that Graeme has mentioned

Hi All
I seem to have to correct seal for the dust covers to locate on but the cv / driveshaft does not pull through the hub enough.
Firstly does the dust seal need to be pushed over the larger diameter of the cv joint?
Thanks

Both that seal and the dust cover go on the inside of the hub, because of it's size, it can only fit one part of the joint..........

Push it on so there is 1/4" of the cv joint sticking through.......

Sounds like you need a service manual......

Yes, both the seals are on the inside of the hub, with the dust seal located on the inner bearing seal. When put together, this what I get.
Sorry in advance but have issues to understand how to get this one to work.

From what I remember they are a good fit in the CV - maybe try on I’ve or first to check it fits, before trying to assemble it all on the hub?
It’s not the end of the world if you don’t use them - many seals don’t have them.

OK, that looks like a not the dust shield issue........

Do the bearings have a separate spacer in between them???? Not very likely, as, for the last 40 years or so, the bearings have had built in spacers.....

The probable cause is, the bearings are two small on the ID fit on the CV joint (it shouldn't happen, but, it does)......I ALWAYS check the fit before final assembly.....

They only need to be as little as .0001" to not be a nice hand press fit......

I think you need to pull the axle, take the inner bearing races out, and, check them for fit on the CV joint shaft........

I think you will find your answer there.....

While it is a good idea to check the fits of the bearing over the CV as bwaminispeed suggests, in this instance, it only looks to me to be the dust shield. Some are a slip fit on to the CV and others can be very tight. I've had a few that for love nor money, just wouldn't go over the CV at all.

I have had problems recently with the plastic dust seal being too small. I had to bin the new ones and fit old ones.
