Hi

Just a question. I want to place a center exhaust on my mk1 cooper. What for type is the best? Show me what you have ;)

Regards
Wesley

Depends whether you like a quiet or (in my opinion) a better sounding exhaust.

So either a twin box RC40 for quietness or a single box RC40 for arguably a better sound.

I have a single box on my 998 Cooper which sounds great and also put one on my S after fitting a twin box system that was too quiet.

Two box RC40 has a nice low down burble but the front box is always perilously close or touching the handbrake cables. The Stainless Steel system on my Mk1 is probably well over 15 years old now but the baffle eventually shifted in the front box and rattled. Have just replaced it with a plain pipe. Will find out later what a single box system sounds like as the final items required turned up in the post today....
Also worth saying the original GEX117 'crimped' twin box system is available these days. Certainly looks the part but no idea on how well it performs in comparison.

Thanks for the replay. Is there a link with the exhaust single box ?

This is the one I always use, along with the ANV180V centre pipe

Yes, it is often down to a personal preference, I'll agree. :)

The main reason I choose the RC40 is that under test many years ago by David Vizard, it came out pretty high up on the flow statistics.

It also is quite a nice looking exhaust.

I have got a Maniflow exhaust manifold on my 998 Cooper and also, I think, on my S.

Someone I'm sure can advise regarding the sound from a Maniflow system.

Maniflow freeflow manifold and centre exit crimped Maniflow pipe for me. Gives a great burble and rasp!

I've got a Maniflow - the build quality and fit (e.g. it's spot on around the remote) is excellent, and the clamps etc in their fitting kits are good quality too. In fact, fitting it was a dream compared to memories of battling with RC40s in my youth!

Mine is the RCM system, like this: https://www.maniflow.co.uk/index.php?vi ... oduct=1364. I was worried it might be a bit noisy compared to a twin box, but it's not excessive at all - just sounds great.

The Maniflow Works style system must be the ultimate choice for a rally Mini. But it's quite a bit more money, and probably a bit noisier too.

Continuing on the Maniflow theme, any got experience of using the Megaphone system?

Does it really work ? Looks like a 2 stroke expansion chamber for a Mini...... :?

Previously owner had fitted a single-box central exit twin tailpipe Peco with an LCB [MED 1380 A+ on a 286 cam], but it was way too loud and droning for me.

Now I’m using the Maniflow GEX117 crimped twin box system [1275 S on a 510 cam] and very happy with it. Nice burble sound but not raucous. Bought it via Somerford.

I’ve had one on my 1293 road rally/track day car for the past 10yrs. To avoid any potential problems with noise tests I spoke to maniflow and had a special made up with an extra central silencer. Works well and not too loud. A number of people have commented how good it sounds. It’s also proven very robust considering how many times it’s been thumped on bumpy white roads. Currently off the car whilst I use the lock down for a minor refresh of a few things, but it will go back on.

I have one on my 1360 and like it a lot. Not too loud and a slight performance boost.

Just a quick heads up.
I spoke to maniflow at a show last year they weren’t overly helpful so at the same show I spoke to somerfords,
Somerfords were extremely helpful and just to top it they were cheaper for the same products..

I've been running a single box RC40 millennium range (stainless) on my Mk2 since shortly after I bought the car (~5 years back). It has a small bore engine and Cooper freeflow (that was ceramic coated in and out prior to installation). To get the system to 'tuck up' I had to alter the mountings and cut the hanger brackets off the box as it was designed to be used with the late production exhaust hangers. I did not realise that when I initially ordered it? A fair amount of trial and error + the modification (and scrapping) of several different exhaust mounts was required. I ended up using a modified competition rear mount and a MS poly bobbin as they seem to be the only ones that would hold up for any length of time. In the 3 or so years since it's been sorted, no issues at all. Tucks up really nice, good tone that is fairly deep and no droning at speed. The exhaust tone isn't quite as nice as a friends Maniflow is (on a completely stock but catless late model 1.3i). As the system is in great shape with no damage or corrosion, I'm not planning to make any changes on my car anytime soon but were I to, it'd likely be for a Maniflow single box system.
