Hi All,
I have ordered some new seals for the doors and boot but the door seal is quite chunky! I have bought these from Bullmotif, is there a supplier that sells more of a thinner walled seal that will compress well as the current ones are also thick and do not compress well.
Any help would be great

There is definitely a company that does a variety of different thicknesses for mk1 doors. I have a few samples at home, but I can't remember the company name.
I will have a look later, and reply then...

Just to follow up, although it seems like others have recommended Phoenix Trim already.

They were really easy, just give them a call and they actually want to talk about. Plenty of useful advice, and a good looking product (although not fitted mine yet)

It really amuses me how often this subject comes up & the variety of answers that are always given.

For what it's worth I have used the Minispares seals for Donkeys years and only in the very early days did I have any issues with the profile being wrong or the material being too hard. In the last 10 or so years they have all been perfect. I am sure this applies to many of the other suppliers too.

In a lot of cases, I would actually say the majority of cases, "poorly fitting seals" are actually a symptom of a badly made door aperture repair where the A panel has been fitted incorrectly & there is too little clearance betwixt door & aperture. Of course, it's much easier to blame the door seals than accept your door is fitted incorrectly. This is a VERY common problem. Look at the gap between the front of your door & the door aperture, if its less than about 10mm & your door doesn't fit because of a crappy seal. . . . . . It's NOT the seal that's at fault!

Same applies if your door fits the hole perfectly without the seal, but doesn't with the seal fitted. IT'S NOT THE SEAL THAT'S THE PROBLEM!

To avoid ANY issues of this sort, buy the seals BEFORE you do the door aperture repair & fit the seal before you position the door!!!!! This isn't rocket science, but it does seem to be a very, very simple precaution that people just don't think of taking!

I have had a hell of a time with boot seals and I can't blame the repair job on the aperture since the entire boot and aperture/rear panel were both perfect and didn't have any repair done to them at all!

I even "plasti-gauged" (using clay) the clearance between the boot lid and the lip on the rear panel and the clearance was almost perfectly consistent all the way around.

That said, I never could find any new production rubber that fit as original. The original rubber works perfectly but is pretty hard and dried up. Nothing I could find even came close except the stick-on rubber I sourced from McMaster-Carr.

Rear quarter window rubbers seem to suffer from the same issue. No repairs done to those apertures but I needed to modify the rubber parts to make them work well.

I must just have the magic touch when it comes to rubbers then. I have fitted 2 new boot seals recently, both went straight on & closed perfectly without any faffing about at all. I know that at least 2 other members have had exactly the same experience with the seals supplied by Minispares recently.

Unlike the old factory boot seal that was a total bitch to fit.

Just thinking that Owners & the expert "Critics" of early Minis today expect & demand that Door Fit has to be mm perfect in alignment & closure .. Me being an "Old Git" my thoughts are that back in the day "IF" you could afford a New Car .. that when you collected this new car from your BMC Dealer in Town it was just accepted by the new car owner that perhaps the Doors did not fit & your warranty concerns only started when the rain entered the car .. so can i ask why do their Grandchildren now ask & demand that Mk1 Mini Doors Fit & Align as to what they consider to be OE ?

I think many of us restoring minis today try for better shut lines than were OE in period because they are sick to death of folk saying “ the doors and bonnet don’t fit very well do they”. If you try to explain that manufactures build quality has improved over the last 60 years you just get “that’s just an excuse”.

Back in 60s and 70s your mini was your favourite colour if you could afford to paint it ( even if you couldn’t there was brush on enamel). It didn’t matter a toss if the bottom corner of your doors stuck out like a pair of fledglings wings. It was transport and fun and it could be made to go quicker so easily. On top of that scrap yards were wonderful places full of interesting spares and stuffed with minis and 1100s.

I know I had an issue with the Phoenix quarter light rubber seals and I had posted something on this forum about the profile being too wide compared to the Mini-spares which were perfect. The sliding window channels and rubber from MS for front door windows were excellent too.

I've just fitted the latest batch of mk1 door seals from mini spares and can report that there better than ever . Extremely soft on the pointed bit of the seal .... ken
