S rear hub bearing

Post by YMJ »

I can tighten up the hub nut to the end of the thread but there is still play in the tapered bearing (as if the inner races have met and cannot go in any further). What is the problem here?

Could I turn a little off each inner race face or is there something wrong with the hub and/or shaft?

There are a couple of reasons why this might be and it is a common enough problem. The wheel bearings could be worn to the point the clearance has increased from new. The bearing sets may have been supplied with an incorrectly sized spacer to match the hub (this seems to be common at the moment) or the bearing cups have turned in the hub at some time and worn the distance shoulders.

The fix would be to face some material from the spacer on a marble or glass block with wet and dry paper and some kero to lube it ( using a figure 8 motion). You don't say whether you have tapered rollers (S) or balls but some people remove the spacer used with tapered rollers and treat it like a regular wheel bearing.

Hi,
They are tapered rollers (not balls) and have no individual spacer - the inner races I think are designed to be tightened up to a preset load.
And, I forgot to mention that everything except the hub is brand new! :?

OK, they have an integral spacer on the inner race of the cones. Face this as described, maybe a little of both races to allow them to come closer together. If you're unsure or I have confused you, let me know.
