I am just about to strip down a 3 sync gearbox for a rebuild. I have only ever done 4 sync gearboxes before but I seem to recall there are a couple of special tools I need. Can s as my body remind me what they are and if I can make do without. Cheers. Mark

You can get away with using brass drifts to knock the bearings out of the case, but the proper tool is a C shaped wedge “3rd motion bearing removal tool. 18G1127”

Mark it’s very straight forward. No special tools needed! As all your old bearing will go in the bin anyway!

Having a job getting the selector forks/rods out. Managed the first one but couldn't believe just how tight the fork was on the shaft. No ridges and the shaft is in good nick but it was more like an interference fit. Don't recall them being that tight???
The reverse and middle one are proving a lot harder. The reverse collar will barely move despite the screw being completely removed and I can't get the setscrew out of the middle shaft as the screw head is slightly rounded off.
Any tips from the seasoned pros on here??? I could carry on but I am concerned that I will damage the ally casing when drifting the selector rods through as i am having to give them quite a clout

Sorted the tool situation. Made a fitting up for my slide hammer to pull the first motion shaft off and used a pile of large washers with a slot cut in them to shunt the double bearing out. Thanks to IanD for his offer of help.

They may have used locktite on them? Even so if they are tight try a little heat depending on what equipment you have. ;)

Good call. Could well be locktite. Gonna get some heat on them

What a palava. Got there in the end. Everything appears mint but every component was so bloody tight it was ridiculous. Hopefully the rebuild will be a cinch
