I’ve got such gear casing, and apparently they were fitted to the Elf and Hornet. So, why on earth would BMC make a different casing just for these cars??

It's been debated a few times here before, but consensus is that they didn't use it specifically on the mutants... the same gearbox was used across many Mk3 of the 73-80 era, and they seem to be particularly prevalent on Mini 1000's exported during that period.
Update: also seen on late Mk1 through early Mk3, 67-73 era, in both remote and rod shift

We had a mk2 cooper s at work that had one , complete with CR gears and hardy dpicer diff

yes, i have found a few early Mk3 CKD Portuguese minis with these casings.
