With BMW's recent interest in using various historic names like 'Broadspeed' for their new MINI coupe and their renewed interest in the classic Mini heritage in general, surely they would likely make an offer that could not be refused?
From the Downton website:

"Should the coupe concept reach production in the next two or three years a suitable name, which evokes the spirit and history of the Mini pedigree, will be required.
(ex)BMW MINI design director Gert Hildebrand has been quoted as saying, “Personally I like Downton, a company that made Minis for celebrities in its time”.

I don't think BMW owning the Downton Engineering name need be a prerequisite for them using Downton as a vehicle badge. Did they purchase the Arden name ?

I think the name DOWNTON schould not been used for a modern New MINI.
This company is/was to old and belongs only on a classic MINI !!!!!

Its a name, that's all.
I can call myself Mr Marvel Captain America Superman Batman Spiderman Green Hornet Forster sadly this doesn't mean I inherit any of the powers.
The jokers who have bought & sold the Downton name have demonstrated this admirably.
I also doubt that they actually have any control of the trademark whatsoever as "Downton" badges have been readily available from many places other that "Downton" for at least 20 years.
