Heater Decals

Hey all,

I've used the search function but to no avail. Hoping someone can point me in the direction of where to get a set of mk1 heater decals? I've seen the ones on ebay which is a sticker that covers the whole front, but I'd rather repaint in crinkle and then stick on just the words. Any ideas?

The general consensus is that it is easiest to Leteraset them with a suitable font. 4mm Gil Sans is pretty much identical. Other than that it is a case of finding someone who has had a batch screen or pad printed. These are usually available on an exchange basis.

I "may" have a screen printed one, but will have to have a look.

This is very close to the original font used.

There was a guy on Facebook that did just the words but they where white printed onto clear and looked odd. Nick at http://www.min-e-bitz.co.uk/ sells restored heater fronts and new ears.

Fred at Nippycars does a really nice replacement front plate...think they are about 40 pounds.
Have seen them...top notch quality.

Thanks all, those are all really helpful leads. Someone PMd me to say that StickyFingers might be able to help, and having messaged them they print directly onto the front plate for a fiver, so I'm going to give them a go. Will report back incase it helps others!

I had some decals printed on waterslide paper.
I was happy how they turned out although probably not as good as the replacement faces.

When I got a large batch of these done for members a few years ago, they were printed directly onto the newly crackled faces. I seen to remember we did these at £20 a piece. From what I can see, the two best options nowadays are either to get Stackyfingers to print them directly onto your own front or buy one of Freds excellent ones.

If you are patient, these are still a decent option.

I have a commercial grade vinyl plotter.
It can cut up to 24" wide vinyl x however long the roll is. 30yds, 50 yds.

I can probably figure out the measurements for them from my '64 heater, I'd just need a good straight on photo of the lettering to replicate that exact font.

The lettering on my heater is not in the best shape.

That way- they could be placed all in one shot...

You better be really, realy patient. I recently cut and applied 2 times "F. Baumgartner / AUSTIN STAHL" onto my model Mini. FGS what a PITA

I used to use Leteraset all the time, in the days before cheap PC based publishing (yes, I really am THAT Old).

I am still a dab hand at leteraseting. For really small stuff, it's better to cut them into strips bofore you try to apply them.

Was some one a few years back offering them as a water slide, they worked well.

Only ones I've seen in recent time have been the set from Japan (ebay), more of a letraset transfer, but its all lined up ready to stick.

If you are going to use Letraset 3mm transfers its easier to mask up the area before you spray on the crinkle paint, that way the letters stick to the flat surface. 'Helvetica medium condensed 3mm' is what I used.

You have to make sure you get the masked off areas the right size and position. Spray the panel matt black and add the masking tape, Spray on the wrinkle paint and 'cook' to cure it. Remove the tape and add the text, if you have done the correct size 'windows' it's fairly easy. I used blue flash tape which can withstand the curing heat.
Too be honest it's a fair amount of effort and if you have to buy the wrinkle paint and flash tape you're you might as well buy one from 'Fred'
And before anybody asks I'm not doing any more!
