Magic wand gearchange 'sticking'

Is any there adjustment, proper method or anything for reinserting the magic wand gearstick?

The gearbox has all been rebuilt, and i can get all the gears but in the lower gears (position of the stick wise) ie 2nd and 4th its really stiff to move the gearstick up?

The haynes manual references a plunger and spring which i guess is missing from the tube at the gearstick end of the housing but that was also missing from the old 'box so that doesn't explain the difference.

or am I worrying over nothing and its just stiff with newness and it'll loosen up?

Rich

I have used many magic wand boxes, both rebuilt & original & none have been unduly stiff. A bit of a strip & a re grease may be in order or just keep an eye on it to see what happens. Was the box totally rebuilt recently?

Yep it was totally built by guessworks.

I'll have a look see if i can get some more grease into the system, I know the stick end has plenty as i took the plate underneath off to have a look what was behind it

Have you got the top knuckle assembly a spline out?

How would I know?? and which joint/ knuckle the right hand one I'm guessing?

I don't think adjusting that will be a barrel of laughs :!:

ah, having looked at the exploded diagram on somerfords website i think you must mean the knuckle at the left, the one thats connected to the selector mechanism?
I'll have to look tomorrow at the access down there.

right, undid the linkage connector where it comes out of the main casing, and its still stiff as, so that narrows it down to somewhere from the gearstick to the linkage that comes out of the top of the diff casing.

For now I'll just try it and see if it loosens up, it won't be this weekend as some parts I ordered didn't come as expected so its going nowhere :(

I'm similar situation - magic wand + completely rebuild gearbox. All the gears are pretty stiff but I'd say it is getting better now, when the car has it done its first few hundreds of miles...

did the reconditioner fit new bronze bushes for the cross shaft?

if so, did he line ream them to fit the rod afterwards????

if not, the rod will be tight until it wears into the bushes

No idea Rich to be honest, but that sounds like a very plausible explanation. Hopefully it'll free up as time goes by.
