Should I buy different grommets or should I of squared the holes before painting? Am I missing something?

If this is for your 1965 car you should have squared the holes.

Small file then touch them in later.
I’d also put the plastic plug in with a liberal application of waxoil or similar

If you already changed your wings, put some rivets as the later cars

Filed the holes square on HOY this week prior to paint.
Usually we fix the bowls with M5 Phillips head machine screws, washers and nuts. Makes it easy to remove if necessary.

I would carefully square the holes then touch in with colour and supertrol/waxoyl too. The plastic inserts will prevent all metal to metal contact which is the best thing you can do. Then do the same with the grille and indicators.

Here's a good idea for maestro Andy....... It's called passing the buck! Andy, while you are doing this simple mod to HOY, squaring the holes and inserting the plastic 'nuts' in the headlights and hopefully, the grille bit, maybe you could photograph it and add it to your magnificent building of HOY thread. SurfBlue has already told us where we can get the plastic non rotating 'nuts' in different sizes.
Over to you! I'm sure that it'd go down well with future body shell re-builders

Sorry for being late to this thread, but would rivnuts be a sensible option?

I was thinking the same thing, I am a big fan of rivnuts with SS machine screws for this type of application. However, for my 997 build, I will try and get all of these small details correct for period.
I am building a vintage racer for a friend and am employing rivnuts in every possible spot, they are a fantastic bit of kit.

Fair enough. Sensible decision on your 997. Good luck!

I used plastic bolts & nuts, similar to what you use to hold your license plates. Used this for the headlamps and turn signals.
