Working out manufactured date - any ideas?

I have just bought a Mk3 1973 mini and spoken with dvla about Historic taxation.

If I can prove it was built prior to Jan 73 then It can be classified, they need proof via a club letter etc.

Firstly though does anyone have any idea how to work out the build from chassis/commission number?

Cheers

Paul

Dunno if you've checked the wiper motor yet. It should have a date stamp on it that confirms the age of the car if original.

Otherwise, the folks on here will probably be able to tell you your car's age if you provide a chassis number

is it remote or rod change ??

BL changed to rod system early 73, and as stated in the above post -

check anything electric - swithes - relay(s) - startermotor - altornator - fusebox - etc, all has date stamped into it.

Its remote change, forgot all about wiper will check.

Guaranteed they wont accept pics of parts with date stamps but at least I should get a 72 or 73 answer

BMIHT have a list of the first chassis numbers for 1973 and can provide a dating letter.

877382 = 850
877360 = 1000
872245 = 1275GT
874510 = Clubman & Estate

are the numbers listed by Glass's.

Good news for you ;) according to Jon Pressnell,s book "Mini The definitive History" BL changed the gearbox from remote to rod-
- as early as December 72 8-)
so there it is - you are taxfree ;)

Big thanks to everyone who helped :-)
