Another Turbo Interloper...

Hey chaps,
Ive been on here for a while now but not put any pics of my car up, but with the current ingression of turbo'd motors I thought this would be a good opertunity...
I got the car about 12 years ago, in need of TLC, ran it around for a year and then took it of the road to tidy it up a bit, as these things go it sat in the garage for years part done, finally got around to spraying it about 5 yers ago, and started putting together an engine with a bit poke than the 1380 it came with, ie a 1380 7 prot turbo, after an issue with a broken cam belt I'm currently putting a new specked lump in,
Curent engine spec is,
1380 , forged pistons, billet crank, H beam rods, RE13 cam ground on wider LCA for turbo use, 1.5:1 roller rockers, carbon pushrods, Oiljets for pistons, Minisport 7 port head ported by Stuart Gurr (37x31), megasquirt fuel injetion, home made inlet and exhaust manifolds, GT2559 VNT turbo (huge but still boosts hard from 2500rpm), custom twinspring Verto pressure plate and billet flywheel, straightcut 4sync remote box with Quife ATB and Kad pinion support.
suspension is all roejointed etc, Kad rear arms and discs, on the front Wilwood 4 pots and 10.25" discs.

Thats a clever one, nice plenum too.

He is a clever sod!! To get all these random parts to work together is an achievement in itself...
And it really does work very well indeed!

Unfortunately 10" wheels won't fit with 10.25" discs

the insides still a work in progress,
it still looks like the pic below, except there is a heater and an odd carpet from a late car thrown in, once the engines in I'll de chav the dash (i dint know what i was thinking...) and put in the black interior I have.
The 13x7's are gone, flogged them on and have replaced them with 6x13's to reduce the scrub radius (improved by 1" !!) as it was a bit... lively in the torque steer department, even on about 10psi boost.
Something i wouldnt want to do is drive this with small brakes, the ones on there "just" go under the 13's, in fact you cant get a stick on wheel weight in there!

Did you make the fuel rail? Its very nice.

How effective is the plenum? Do you suffer any resonance at any point in the rev range?
Calculating the correct volume looks like a nightmare..

Well Ive not managed to get the thing on the rollers yet
personally I think people read too much into Plenum volume, my opinion is bigger is better, ie closer to a NA setup, however my runners are far too short due to bonet constraints.
the volume of my plenum is about 2.2 litres, it ended up big because of the large wasted space between ports 2&3 and the large diameter of the ports, from what I have read about 1,5 litres is about right for a 1300, but as i said, IMO bigger better
ect...
anyway, power delivery is quite smooth, the turbo kicks in about 2000-2500 rpm you get a pretty linear pull too about 4500 then it comes on strong again through to the red line, as this is such an odd setup the are far to many posible reasons to speculate...
anyway this is it on 7 psi, its a bit quicker on 18....

Thats cheating
he he (smiling)
its raining
you get much better volume/filling, when its "damp/humid, or rain"
sounds great
must be a handfull

If it pulls cleanly through the rev range then you've got it right, I've seen some hit about 4k and almost hit a wall because of the air bouncing around.

I totally ignored the volume of my plenum, mad it fit as best I could and used judgement to make something tha equalised flow in all 4 inlets.
I also tried to make my rnners as long as was practical. Anyway it all seems to work and certinally makes the power. If anyone is interesed I'll start a seperate thread. It's not a mk1 by a long way!
