I picked this up a few months ago and had forgotten about posting it up until Mikeyjim posted the picture in the Period Picture thread.

Lots of interesting info and some good period ads.

great Stu, I as a child saw the field pass through Wimborne at 3pm on the 19th, at the time the whole town was a one way system and it was surprising how many competitors including the works teams wrong slotted and circled the town at least onetime! a great viewing opportunity though.

Today its interesting to look at the Price Money awarded £250 for the Winner & £40 for best finished Female ..
(Money its all relative as a 1st Year Apprentice in 1966 i was on £3.17.6p per week.)

Irrespective this was a proper RAC Rally and was promoted with big interest in the Press & TV .. back then the Rally was something special & was the showcase for "production" cars .. the public wanted what was being demonstrated & could buy the standard showroom car & the bolt on bits to "hot it up" back when we all had Traffic Light GP,s

Stage times - points to remember:
By the time of this rally the works Lotus Cortina had a massive power advantage over the works Cooper S, even before BMC shot themselves in the foot by fitting the standard 510 cam for the 66 RAC in all but Makinen's car of the 8 works cars entered. This was because of the snow of the 1965 RAC. (Makinen probably insisted on a 544, against the wider policy).
Makinen punctured on the first stage.
Elford (with Clark R. the two most likely works Fords to feature) had engine problems from the start.
Clark R. was said to be using an "experimental diff" and went off on Puddletown, damaging the radiator and having the head gasket fail. He was leading Makinen on all the earlier stages.
Lulworth had significant tarmac sections at the start and finish (but not enough to warrant anything but forest tyres). Porlock was all tarmac. BMC had long been using Dunlop Racing tyres on tarmac. Goodyear racers were not yet suitable for rallying and Ford were still using G800 road tyres on tarmac, even on the recent Coupe des Alpes.
It is usually forgotten that the Scandinavian-crewed Renault R8 Gordinis were serious players on this rally.

Makinen, GRX5D had a 648 cam according to the build sheet with 89bhp at the wheels on Abingdon rollers. Kallstroms JBL with 510 showed 75bhp at the wheels, the expected snow never arrived with Timo in easily the quickest works Mini on the event.

I see the Programme is now posted in the Archive section - but only the Aaltonen and Fall results are mentioned. Kallstrom's 2nd O/A needs to be added there!
