Homologation Papers

Post by LMM76C »

The Archive section of this site includes a valuable resource in the copies of Mini Homologation Papers contained there.

I'm sure I have corrected some details before but it is worth explaining again exactly what is there.
This would seem to be the logical section for this, as these papers are all about homologation for motorsport, not the more general use of the term in the wider context of vehicle production.

All papers carry an official "Valid From" date - "Recognised by" date in other words.
These are not (as currently described) "Submitted to" dates. (The date submitted would be some time previously, essentially an earlier date to allow consideration and approval).
Such papers for UK cars were submitted to the then RACMSA, who were technically the agent of the FIA for UK cars' homologation and official embossing (not stamping) of the papers. Although not relevant to original Minis, the RACMSA became the MSA and in recent weeks has just been rebranded "Motorsport UK".

When Appendix J of the FIA changed with effect from 1.1.66. new homologation was required for every car. (It changed again w.e.f. 1.1.82. but that is not relevant to original Minis).

The papers shown are a mix of new papers from 1.1.66. and original papers issued under the old Appendix J that terminated 31.12.65. and were thus cancelled from that date.

848 Mini
5027 are not the original 1959 848 papers, they are the new papers valid from 1.1.66. Note that hydrolastic suspension is the homologated spec.

997 Cooper
1095 are the original papers valid from 16.1.62. The 997 was not re-homologated for 1.1.66.

1071 S
1201 are the original 1071 papers valid from 9.5.63. The 1071 was not re-homologated for 1.1.966.

998 Cooper
5013(? - only clear later on in papers). The new papers valid from 1.1.66. Note only hydrolastic suspension was homologated post 1.1.66. (However the later 998 Mini papers were amended to include dry suspension - and S brakes - so from then on a dry 998 Mini could be run in Gp2 to 998 Cooper spec when manifold/carbs became free, so long as it had 998 Mini badges not Cooper badges).

970 S
1515 are the original papers valid from 11.4.64.

1275 S
1300 are the original papers valid from 11.4.64.

1275 S
5028 are the new papers valid from 1.1.66. Only hydrolastic was homologated then.

1275 S
The later 1275 S papers shown are the above 5028 but including later Amendments up to 1970.

The other 1275 S listings are Amendment extracts from the 5028 papers covering "option" heads and re-added dry suspension.

The FIA has an archive site with 57 Mini Homologations including the original 1047 September 1959 Austin Seven papers. They even have homologation papers for the 1961 Austin Seven Countryman. These are all in Pdf format so are easy to download/copy/print.

As has always been the case, the FIA's attempts to provide definitive history have sometimes to be taken with a pinch of salt, especially dates.
