Obituary: David Morgan

"He is best-known for his one-off grand prix start with Surtees and being punched by James Hunt after a Crystal Palace Formula 3 shunt, (see video below) but that doesn't do justice to the talents of David Morgan.
Morgan, who died last Tuesday after a stroke at the age of 74, was one of the leading lights of British single-seater talent during the early 1970s, and along with younger brother Richard was one-half of one of the most gifted pairs of British racing siblings of all time. Neither got the breaks their abilities merited.
The son of a racing enthusiast and Jaguar XK140 racer, Morgan began racing in saloons with a one-litre Mini in 1965 and graduated to Formula 3 five years later."

Daily Express F3 Trophy Final - Crystal Palace October 1970
Recorded from the TV on VHS many years ago "100 Greatest Sporting Moments". Fantastic F3 race from the old Crystal Palace circuit featuring a titanic battle between James Hunt, David Morgan, Mike Beuttler, Gerry Birrell and Tony Trimmer. The irrepressible Murray Walker provides the commentary.
The final event at Crystal Palace in October that year was immortalised on television when the BBC broadcast the Formula 3 final. Morgan tried just a bit too hard on the last corner going for third place and caused a huge accident involving James Hunt. James jumped out of his car, ran over to Morgan and flattened him with a single blow. Dave Morgan was later found guilty of reckless driving by the RAC, and was fined and banned. He subsequently appealed and was allowed to continue his racing activities in Formula Atlantic in 1971.
