Fibreglass matting seems to be sold by weight. Anyone recommend what to go for firewllaing rear parcelshelf, seat backrest etc

It's not like steel, where you'd only put one layer.
It's not unusual to build up several/many layers to get the required thickness.
Lighter grades of g/f are much more flexible to work with so I'd tend to choose the weight by how flat the area is - if you need to get tight radius curves or intricate shapes use a lighter cloth than if you're just making up a flat panel.

They do a woven tape or mat which makes a tidier job rather than chopped strand.

I just used one of the off the shelf 'kits' from Halfords, seemed to be plenty in there to do the job.

I did the same as GraemeC. Buy one of the complete kits from Halfords, one kit was just about perfect for one rear bulkhead.

just a thought (so you may have smelt burning) what about exhaust heat wrap if your intending on puting it on the areas that enter the boot area from the rear seat? i imagine it would make a nice job on finishing the edges, plus you know its prity good at resisting heat!
iv used it with resin in the past and it looked nice and was nice and strong too
